Slow Session

Music School Notices

Based on requests for change, after some discussion and consultation, and in the interests of 'continuous improvement', we would like to make some small changes to the "Slow Session" in terms of format and dates:

1) The Session will run every other Friday. i.e. every two weeks beginning Friday 8th January 2010;
2) There will be no distinction between sessions with regard to pace or range of tunes,
Previously we ran an Intermediate and an Advanced session. This will no longer be the case; All will still be very welcome.
3) The first hour or so, up until the tea break, will be based on the EATMS Tune book and the tune tempo will be adjusted to accommodate all present. This will be the "Slow or Intermediate" part of the Session";
4) After the first hour or so, after the tea break, we will run as a standard session. All will still be very welcome, however the tempo will not be constrained and the tunes will range beyond the EATMS Tune Book.

So for early 2010 the dates will be:
8th Jan
22nd Jan
5th Feb
19th Feb

We may have to adjust the dates as we progress to facilitate attendance at other sessions. Any changes to the running schedule will be communicated by this distribution list and posted on the Notice Board of the EATMS Web site.

Best wishes to all for a great Christmas.
We look forward to hearing from you in the New Year.

Kind regards

Brian and Martin

Nearly all of the 100 tunes in the EATMS tune book (plus loads more) can be found on www.tradirishmusic.org.
See and hear the sheet music in the Myriad Music browser plug-in, hear and download the EATMS recording of the tune, plus links to other resources for that tune elsewhere on the web.
Check out the 'useful links' Tab on www.tradirishmusic.org for a link to a great Irish Music Rhythm Tutor.

-------------------------------------

Parking is now available in the gasworks yard if you are there at 8pm.
Please note that the yard entrance is on Irish Quarter South and this is now one way street with access from the Albert Road end.

-------------------------------------

Experienced musicians please note that the sessions are primarily aimed at relative newcomers. You are of course very welcome but please be prepared for tunes being played at a pace maybe slower than you are used to. Having said that, we are confident that the quality and pace of the music played is something that even the most experienced musicians will enjoy.

I have been learning to play harp with EATMS for the last 6 months and would like to take the next step into the session environment to help improve my confidence and learn to play with other musicians. I could not see any information on the beginners sessions on the site, would a beginner be welcome at the intermediate session? - Carrickfergus

The Slow Session started on Friday night (29th Aug) with 15 musicians attending. A great night and a great start to the season.

The Beginner's sessions will start on Wed 10th Sept. All you need is the ability to play some of the tunes from the introductory section of the EATMS tune book. We'll provide a welcoming, constuctive environment to help you begin playing with others. A stepping stone to the Friday night Slow Session and beyond.

All welcome.

The CARRICKFERGUS SLOW SESSIONS under the auspices of the East Antrim Traditional Music School is held approx. every three weeks, on a Friday evening at 8pm in the wonderfully traditional setting of the Flame Gasworks Museum, 44 Irish Quarter West, Carrickfergus.
Music played at session is primarly taken from the East Antrim School's Tutorial Book collection. So buy a book, get playing and come along and join us.
Remaining dates up to summer 2008 are:
Friday 25th April,
Friday 16th May,
Friday 6th June (Summer BBQ)

A 'SLOWER SLOW SESSION' is held on Wednesday's on a fortnightly basis, again in the Gasworks. These are for people who are learning an instrument and are ready to start trying to play with others. It assumes people are learning the tunes outside the session and works particularly well for those taking lessons through the East Antrim Trad Music School, but is open to all adult budding trad music players. Next 'Slower Slow Session' is on Wednesday 7th May 2008 at 7pm.
Keep an eye on this website for further dates.

Thanks and well played to all who turned up and participated in the St. Paddy’s week-end event. Around 65 people turned up to listen, which was a great turn out, there certainly wasn’t room for many more. There was a great mix of songs and instrumentals, a very enjoyable night.
The following are dates (every three weeks) for Slow Session events up to the summer:
4th April
25th April
16th May
6th June
We’ll be back to our normal format on the 4th April after what was a rather fast rendition of our tunes on St Paddy’s Week-end. Normal start time of 8pm.

There is a great Polka set in the intermediate section of the EATMS tune book, Number 43 on page 40. “As I went out upon the ice”, “Sweeney’s” and “O’Connor’s”. It would be great to give these a go on the 4th April, so if you get a chance to practice one, two or all three of them before then, great and we’ll give them a go on the 4th.
Kind regards
Brian & Martin
